Abortion is a procedure that ends and expels a pregnancy. Depending on how far along the pregnancy is, different procedures may be available.
A medical abortion, more commonly known as the abortion pill or RU-485, is a series of pills used in succession to terminate and then expel the pregnancy. This procedure is usually used early in pregnancy.
The first pill, mifepristone, is usually taken in a doctor’s office or clinic. Mifepristone blocks the supply of progesterone to the pregnancy, and without it, the pregnancy cannot continue. The second pill, misoprostol, is typically taken within 48 hours at home. Misoprostol causes your uterus to expel the embryo through the vaginal canal.
Surgical abortions are used later in pregnancy than medical abortions. There are several different types of surgical abortion, but all are in-clinic procedures. They involve dilating the cervix and removing the pregnancy using suction, forceps, curettes, or other surgical instruments. Depending on your abortion provider, local or general anesthesia may be available.
